Prenatal Pain and Discomfort

Pregnant woman suffering from prenatal pain

At various points during your pregnancy, you may experience prenatal pain and discomfort, which is entirely normal. Fortunately, prenatal pain treatment has advanced to the point that you can soothe your discomfort in several ways. This article will discuss some of the most common pain pregnant women experience, how they can be caused, and potential treatments.

Common Pain and Discomfort for Pregnant Women

You can experience many types of pain and discomfort during pregnancy, such as nausea, leg cramps, and sciatica. Every woman feels pain differently. Some pregnant women experience no pain at all if they're lucky! Here are some basics on how they can be treated.

Back Pain and Sciatica

A growing belly, hormones, and weight gain can contribute to lower back pain during pregnancy, especially in the later months. During pregnancy, the uterus can exert pressure on your sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back, hip, and down your leg. This condition is known as sciatica. It’s always best to call your doctor immediately if you experience severe back pain coupled with a fever or severe numbness in your legs and feet.

Belly Pain

When your baby grows, the muscles around the uterus pull and stretch. The result can be low abdominal pain. It may be worse when you cough or sneeze. However, after staying still for a while or changing positions, the pain usually disappears.

Nausea

Nausea and vomiting are quite common in pregnancy and can occur at any time of the day or night. During the first trimester of pregnancy, morning sickness is common for many pregnant women. Some options to ease those symptoms include snacking during the day and drinking ginger ale. Various over-the-counter medicines can help relieve nausea as well.

Leg Cramps

The second and third trimesters are characterized by leg cramps in your calves and even in your feet. These cramps tend to occur at night when you should be sleeping. We don't know for sure what causes leg cramps during pregnancy, but it’s beneficial to stretch your legs before bed and do some activity every day.

Fluid Retention and Pelvic Pain

In pregnancy, additional fluid builds up as hormones change, allowing the body to expand more easily as the baby and uterus grow. This normal swelling is known as edema, and it usually begins in the second half of pregnancy, with the worst symptoms occurring in the third trimester.

Pelvic pain during pregnancy can also occur due to increased blood flow to the pelvic area. The pressure can cause other symptoms as well, such as constipation or hemorrhoids.

Headaches

Most women suffer from headaches during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. The most common causes are pregnancy hormones, stress, and body tension caused by carrying extra weight during pregnancy. Cutting back on your caffeine intake during pregnancy can also cause headaches until your body adjusts.
